Airbnb limits young adults renting homes to crack down on house parties

Airbnb is restricting the ability of young adults to rent homes in an effort to prevent house parties, an issue that drew critical attention after a shooting at a house party hosted at a California Airbnb left five dead last year.

“Specifically, we are restricting booking guests under the age of 25 without a track record of positive reviews from booking local, entire home listing anywhere in the United States,” said Charlie Urbancic, an Airbnb spokesperson, in an email.

HOTELS: Houston hotels not expected to recover until 2024

A teenager or young college student living in Houston, for example, who has fewer than three positive reviews on Airbnb would not be able to book a large home for one night in Houston. That guest could still book a private room in Houston or any type of listing outside of a certain radius of Houston.

The company also said limiting parties would be a boon for public health during the pandemic.
